Designing
for the future
Ravensbourne
College of Design and Communication
In
2001 we were invited to develop a new web site and strategy for
Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication.
Ravensbourne's
reputation is based on its ability to foster students' creative
and technical expertise. Its website needed to communicate this
message clearly and consistently to both prospective students and
the general public.
What
we did
We coordinated an extensive audit of requirements of stakeholders
across the college's staff and students. Using the results we drew
up a three-phase technology and content development strategy for
the college's website.
The
first phase of the site has been designed to
- reflect Ravensbourne's style and branding
- provide a clear structure for the courses and college information
- allow the students to develop their own creative areas within
the site
- be flexible enough to grow and change with the college
Initially
built in standard HTML, the site is currently being redeveloped
using XML. This will allow content on the college's intranet to
be reused on the internet and makes it easy to adapt the site's
look and feel for the relevant medium (such as mobile device, desktop
PC.) It will also ease compliance with government web accessibility
requirements.
Ongoing
support
We worked closely with the college on day-to-day developments (writing,
coding and updating) and on the second phase of the original plan
which extends the content and functionality.
